British Prime Minister announces plans to close door on foreign workers.

Gordon Brown has pledged to tighten the new points-based entry system and has pledged to close the door to foreign doctors and a string of other professions as part of a crackdown to cut immigration into Britain.

In addition, hospital consultants, civil engineers, aircraft engineers and ship’s officers were being removed from the list.

Mr Brown said the Government's latest assessments were that net migration, which hit more than 290,000 in 2005, has fallen by more than 40 per cent over the last year and pledged it would fall further.

Having closed the door on unskilled non-EU migrants, the Prime Minister is preparing to close it on skilled migrants from outside the EU. In reality the number of foreigners prevented from taking a skilled job will be lower, probably in the tens of thousands

The number of foreign students given visas could be cut under plans announced by Gordon Brown. In his first key speech on immigration, the Prime Minister also outlined plans to reduce hundreds of thousands of potential jobs in shortage occupations.

A review of student visas by the Home Office and Department for Business will “look at the case for raising the minimum level of course for which foreign students can get a visa”.

Visas can be granted for those studying NVQ (National Vocational Qualification) level 3 or higher, although Home Office sources said that bar was likely to be raised by the review. In addition, a requirement that applicants speak English, already required for those on degree and postgraduate courses, is likely to be extended to all student visas apart from those for people taking English courses.
